Fraser Island Sample Itinerary
Fraser Island is one of Australia's icons, with plenty to see and do on the island. With so much to experience on this World Listed Heritage Site, we have put together a sample itinerary of the highlights, whether you only have a day or more.
With amazing sand to sink your feet into, exotic rainforests to explore and amazing swimming holes at every turn, Fraser Island really is nature at its best. This World Heritage Listed region is situated on the coast of Queensland and features many different elements of nature with its freshwater lakes, sand dunes, and beaches as well as its native dingo population.
Fraser Island is also the largest sand island in the world and is a must-see when venturing into Queensland, Australia. Getting there is easy and worth the short ferry ride from the mainland.
Sample Itinerary
There are two ways to travel around this world-renowned island either via your own high-clearance four-wheel drive vehicle (taken over via the ferry), or single or multiple day tours which are guided or self-drive.
Once on Fraser Island, you will venture down the exciting 75-Mile Beach which is actually a sand highway for all vehicles to access and make their way around. This is a delightful experience in itself whether you are on a self-drive tour or guided trip.
Along this large stretch of gazetted road, you will come across a number of thrilling sights, including the famous shipwreck known as the S.S Maheno which is a large vessel now wrecked on the beach, when it washed up there after a cyclone. This is certainly something to see on the island as it rusts and settles into the sand!
Continuing along 75-Mile Beach, head to another popular location at Indian Head which is home to the magnificent Champagne Pools which are perfect for a quick dip in the saltwater! The pools are natural made jacuzzi-like pools, getting their name from the foaming waters as the waves crash and stir them up!
After cooling off at this swimming hole, you will no doubt see yourself admiring the colourful sand dunes and cliffs of Fraser as well as the sandblows known as the Cathedrals.
Heading inland from the beach, there are just as many hidden gems which are worth visiting, including Central Station – an aged forest township which is now a historic site situated within the rainforest with walking tracks for access.
Just nearby you will come across Eli Creek which is a popular freshwater swimming hole, created by an aquifer (water table), filtering water through the sands. Another freshwater treasure is Lake McKenzie which features more clear waters and a sandy shore, while Lake Wabby, located in the dense rainforest, is another deep watering hole surround by sand dunes.
The adventure won't end here, with so much more to see and experience on the island including its amazing beaches which are great for relaxing, beach sports and games and fishing. Even just driving around the island itself is an adventure in itself! You can spend a day, several days or as much time as you want exploring one of Australia's most beautiful icons.
