Badjala Sandblow and the Giant Satinay

During your trek through the rainforest, you can undertake two small detours to some amazing natural attractions. The first is the Badjala Sanblow, a vast expanse of shimmering sand that overlooks the K'gari coastline. The second side trail takes you to the Giant Satinay, one of the oldest and most colossal trees on the island.

After hiking around 18.5km throughout the day, you'll arrive at the campsite in Valley of the Giants, where all your belongings, a cozy camp, delicious food, and cold drinks await you.

Day 2

Walking distance: 15.6km total

Lake Garawongera

Upon waking under a canopy of trees, fuel up with some breakfast before continuing on your hiking adventure. As you walk through the island's unique landscapes, you'll pass Petrie's Camp which is a historic logging site. You'll also pass the Tallowood, another one of the island's most giant and ancient trees.

Eventually, you'll arrive at Lake Garawongera. Cool off with a swim in the lake, kick your feet up, and enjoy another freshly prepared meal with a glass of wine. Listen to the serenity of nature, gaze up at the stars, and sink into a state of bliss.

Spend the morning having breakfast and swimming in the lake before setting off on your final day of hiking. Trek east over to 75 Mile Beach, the gorgeous strip of golden sand that spans the length of K'gari's eastern shore. From here, your guides will pick you up in a 4WD and drive you over to Central Station. Here you'll have some lunch before continuing your hike through the vibrant rainforests of Pile Valley.

Lake McKenzie

Continue exploring the pristine, untouched forest until you reach Lake McKenzie. Arguably the island's most famous landmark, Lake McKenzie is a breathtakingly beautiful perched lake. You'll have some free time here to wander around the famous lake while snapping photos, swimming, and feeling the soft white sand in your toes.

After soaking in every minute at Lake McKenzie, your guides will drive you back to the ferry on the western shore of K'gari. Feel free to grab a drink or watch the sunset at Kingfisher Bay Resort while you wait for the ferry to bring you back to Hervey Bay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there age restrictions on this tour?

There is an age limit of 12 years and over. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There are no upper age restrictions for walkers with suitable ability, however walkers with medical conditions should check with the operator before booking.

What does "pack-free" mean?

On a pack-free hike, a support team will transport your overnight bags to and from the campsites. The team will also take care of all the camping equipment and set-up, as well as food prep and storage. So all you have to carry is your small pack for the day including your camera, phone, sun protection, swimmers, etc. (See "What To Bring" for more details).

What level of fitness do I need?

This 3-day walking tour includes about 45km of hiking through southern and central K'gari with roughly 13-15km covered each day. The trails are moderate, but you will cover a lot of ground over 3 days so a decent level of fitness is required.

How many people can join the tour?

These walking tours take anywhere from 2-6 guests. The tour will not run with only 1 hiker, so the minimum is 2 guests and the maximum is 6.

What shoes should I wear for the hike?

Definitely have good-quality hiking shoes with ankle support and good traction so your feet stay stable and comfortable while hiking 45km! You can bring sandals or other comfy shoes to wear at the campsite in the evening if you wish.

Is it safe to hike through the K'gari wilderness?

The K'gari Walking Tours team takes safety very seriously. No one hikes alone and everyone is in a group with an experienced tour guide. The support team also uses the Garmin Rino 2-Way Radio/GPS Navigator with Sensors for our pack-free hikers to communicate with the guide or use in an emergency. These devices also have GPS navigation so our team can locate you in an emergency.
