Fraser Island Compared To Other Destinations

Updated Fri 08 Jul 2022

It is hard to compare the world's largest sand island to other destinations, and in actual fact Fraser Island is really in a league of its own.

Unlike other popular tourist destinations around Australia and the rest of the world, Fraser Island is relatively untouched, and remains in its natural state as one of Mother Earth's rarities, consisting of amazing coloured sand dunes, deep fresh water lakes, dense lush rainforests and a whole lot more.

Based in southern Queensland, Fraser Island is and easily accessible island off the coast and is popular among day and overnight tourists - backpackers, families, couples and solo travellers alike. The island attracts a large number of visitors because of its diversity and wide range of tours and overnight trips on offer to suit everyone.

What is there?

When it comes to things to see and do on the island, the list of possibilities is seemingly endless. Experience driving along the famous 75-mile Beach Highway, take a walk through the Central Station Rainforest, take a splash in Eli Creek, Lake Wabby or Champagne Pools, stand over Indian Head, get a photo alongside the Maheno Shipwreck and venture through the coloured sand dunes... Fraser Island has so much to offer to its visitors. And don't forget the iconic Fraser dingoes which you are bound to see along the way! Fraser Island is home to a vast variety of plants and animals that make the island a natural haven for Australia's wildlife.

Fraser Island's natural landscape of stretching sands and unique perched lakes make it a destination unlike any other. There is no where else in the world quite like it, where you can enjoy exploring and adventuring for days on end and still walk away feeling in awe and wonder of this beautiful sandy island!

How to do it?

There are several ways to visit Fraser Island, including day trips and overnight trips.

There are two overnight tour types to choose from; either tag along (self drive) or guided (with a driver). Depending on which trip you prefer to do, both will take you to the best spots around the island. In a tag along tour, there is a convoy of 4WD vehicles that follow a lead car and are driven by guests, where as a guided tour is conducted from a larger 4WD bus, where your tour guide drives you around the island.

There are also several types of accommodation that you can take advantage of during an overnight tour. You can also choose to camp while on the island or stay in resort-style accommodation, depending on what you feel most comfortable doing. There are many options to stay a little longer in some accommodation places as well located off the island (please ask our friendly travel agents).

There are also many guided day trips around the island which are all have similar itineraries (with slight changes to passenger numbers, price, age group etc). And if you are wanting to do something a little bit different, there are frequent scenic flights available directly from the beach!

Fraser Island really is incomparable to other destinations, and must be seen to be believed and appreciated. As the largest sand island in the world, it should be on any bucket list for those who like the unique, the different and the beautiful!
