Lake Boomanjin

From the Dilli Village Trailhead, it's a 6.3km walk through the lush forest tracks to Lake Boomanjin. You'll stop for lunch at Lake Boomanjin, which is the largest perched lake in the world! This gorgeous lake rarely has any crowds and is known for its refreshing waters that are stained red from tannins from the surrounding trees.

Lake Benaroon Campsite

After Lake Boomanjin, continue hiking for 7.2 until you reach Lake Benaroon. This is another beautiful K'gari lake that isn't normally visited by tourists so you can enjoy some peace and quiet at your campsite. The crew will have already transported your overnight bags and set up camp, so you can just relax, tuck into a cheeseboard and some dinner, and chill out under the stars.

Day 2

Walking distance: 14.1km total

Hike to Central Station

Your second morning begins with a delicious breakfast at the campsite and a swim in Lake Benaroon to start your day on an energizing note. You'll spend the morning hiking towards Central Station, stopping at the picturesque Lake Birrabeen on the way. After about 7.5km, stop at Central Station in the heart of the rainforest. Admire the magnificent, ancient rainforests as you feast on a cooked lunch.

With its glistening white sands and vibrant sapphire waters, this amazing perched lake is worth all the hype. Wrap up your day with a tranquil swim and refuel with more freshly prepared meals. Then lie back in your tent and get some much-needed rest before the final day of your K'gari walking tour!

Day 3

Walking distance: 15.1km total

Sunrise at Lake McKenzie

Soak in the bliss of a pastel sunrise over Lake McKenzie, go for a swim, and eat some breakfast. It's time for your biggest and final day of hiking! It's a 12km hike to Lake Wabby, the deepest lake on K'gari.

Lake Wabby

Upon arriving at Lake Wabby, you can admire the views from Lake Wabby Lookout and have a picnic lunch before heading down to the emerald-coloured lake for a swim. Feel the soft, golden sand of the Hammerstone Sand Blow in your toes and let the freshwater lake soothe your hard-working legs.

From Lake Wabby it's a 2km walk to the Eastern Beach where you'll be picked up in a 4WD and transferred over to Kingfisher Bay Resort. Treat yourself to a cocktail and relax as you wait for the ferry to bring you back to the mainland.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there age restrictions?

There is an age limit of 12 years and over. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There are no upper age restrictions for walkers with suitable ability, however walkers with medical conditions should check with the operator before booking.

What is a pack-free hike?

On a pack-free hike, a support team will transport your overnight bags to and from the campsites. The team will also take care of all the camping equipment and set-up, as well as food prep and storage. So all you have to carry is your small pack for the day including your camera, phone, sun protection, swimmers, etc. (See "What To Bring" for more details).

What level of fitness do I need for the Blue Lakes Eco Hike?

This 3-day walking tour includes about 45km of hiking through southern and central K'gari with roughly 13-15km covered each day. The trails are moderate, but you will cover a lot of ground over 3 days so a decent level of fitness is required.

How many people will be on the tour?

These walking tours take anywhere from 2-6 guests. The tour will not run with only 1 hiker, so the minimum is 2 guests and the maximum is 6.

What shoes should I wear?

Good-quality hiking shoes are recommended. You'll want ankle support and good traction so your feet stay stable and comfortable while hiking 45km! You can bring sandals or other comfy shoes to wear at the campsite in the evening if you wish.

Is it safe to hike on K'gari?

The K'gari Walking Tours team takes safety very seriously. No one hikes alone and everyone is in a group with an experienced tour guide. The support team also uses the Garmin Rino 2-Way Radio/GPS Navigator with Sensors for our pack-free hikers to communicate with the guide or use in an emergency. These devices also have GPS navigation so our team can locate you in an emergency.
