Set out on a magnificent 4-day, 3-night Valley of the Giants Hike on K'gari (Fraser Island). This trail is the ultimate adventure for experienced hikers and nature lovers, taking you deep into the heart of K'gari's thriving rainforest. Over the course of 4 days, you'll cover approximately 50km of lush, forested trails, passing through the magnificent Valley of the Giants, home to some of the largest and oldest Satinay trees on the island, as well as ancient sand dunes and crystal clear freshwater lakes.

Designed with hike-enthusiasts in mind, this trail provides you with your cooking equipment and basic camping gear, but leaves you to do the heavy lifting. You'll be carrying your own equipment and hiking without a tour guide by your side. It's the perfect opportunity to be truly at one with nature. Day 1: Check-in and 4WD transfer from Hervey Bay

Walking distance: 7.1km total

Overnight camping: Valley of the Giants

Your journey will begin when you meet the Walking Tours team at their office in Urangan (you can either make your own way or take the complimentary hotel pick-up). Once you've had your safety briefing, been given your equipment, and discussed your itinerary, you'll head over to the Hervey Bay ferry point and cruise over the K'gari!

Once you're on the world's largest sand island, you will be taken to Poyungan Valley where the access track can be found and you can begin your hike. After a lunch break, you and your fellow hikers will embark on a 7km walk through the beautiful rainforest, until you reach the Valley of the Giants.

Day 2: Go for a dip in Lake Wabby

Walking distance: 16.1km total

Overnight camping: Lake Wabby

After waking with the sun and enjoying a peaceful morning at the campsite, you'll set off on a 16km hike through the rainforest until you arrive at the dreamy Lake Wabby. Enjoy a well-earned lunch break at the Budjala Sandblow (an additional 1.2km sidewalk) for some gorgeous panoramic views of the beach.

When you reach the Lake Wabby lookout and the walker's campsite, you'll have plenty of time to set up camp for the afternoon and enjoy a refreshing dip in the lake's pristine waters.

Day 3: Venture on to Lake McKenzie

Walking distance: 12.8km total (option to extend to 22.8km)

Overnight camping: Lake McKenzie

Today will be an early start to watch the breathtaking sunrise over the lookout. After a light breakfast, it'll be time to set off again for today's hike. Trek through the lush rainforests again for about 12km, eventually arriving at the famous Lake McKenzie.

Those keen on an extra challenge can take a longer 22km route that takes you through beautiful spots like Pile Valley, Central Station and Basin Lake. Either way, both trails will end at Lake McKenzie. Once you make it to the camp site, you'll set up for the night and have plenty of time to cool off in the lake and enjoy the magnificent colours of the sunset.

Day 4: Final stretch to Kingfisher Bay

Walking distance: 13.8km

Start your last day on K'gari with a sunrise swim and enjoy the tranquility of the secluded hiker's beach over breakfast. At around 10am, it'll be time to embark on the final stretch of the hike. The bush walk from Lake McKenzie to Kingfisher Bay Resort will take you about 13.8km. Once you get to Kingfisher Bay, you can unwind with a refreshing drink and snacks, and get ready to catch the ferry back to the mainland, where your magnificent adventure will come to an end.

Due to the campsites' location in the midst of the forest, amenities are limited. There is no phone reception or electricity, and the only amenities at the site are picnic tables, drop toilets, and running water. Showers are not available either, so take advantage of your lake visits and opt for a swim in the pristine waters to freshen up!

Terms and Conditions

Important Information:

  • This tour includes around 50km of walking and is suitable for experienced to advanced hikers with a high fitness level
  • This tour runs from March to October
  • Please wear good quality hiking shoes with support
  • The camping facilities include composting toilets and running water, but no showers
  • Terrain includes a mix of forest and bush tracks
  • There are limited facilities at the campsite and limited mobile service
  • Hike groups will be provided with a satellite GPS messenger that can send your locational information back to base, or be activated in an emergency situation
  • Due to a lack of phone signal and different hiking terrains, hikers are not allowed to walk solo and must stay with the group.

Your Responsibilities:

You must reconfirm all booked tours prior to travel as specified on your voucher. If applicable, notes such as dietary requirements, pick-up locations and additional fees should also be confirmed at this time. Reconfirmations cannot be actioned through Fraser Tours / Mr Travel, and must be done so directly through the Service Operator as specified on each ticket.

It is your responsibility to notify us of ticket discrepancies. Please read through the details on your voucher thoroughly to ensure all details such as passenger names, ages and dates of travel on vouchers are correct.

It is the responsibility of all passengers travelling to advise both your travel agent at the time of booking and vessel check-in agent before boarding of any medical conditions including food allergies you may suffer from.

You need to allow adequate time to check-in prior to the specified departure time. 


Prices/Extra Costs:

All prices are stated in Australian dollars and include GST. Surcharges over peak holiday seasons may apply. 

The Service Operator reserves the right to alter prices and extra costs. Extra costs may include EMC fees, Stingersuit/Wetsuit Hire, Luggage Storage, Insurance, Linen Hire, National Park Fees, Fuel Levies, Dietary Fees, etc. Bonds may also apply.

We will also endeavour to communicate these extra costs with you at the time of booking, and on your ticket. However, it is your responsibility to confirm which (if any) additional costs apply with each Service Operator upon reconfirming your trip.


Travel Risk/Insurance:

It should be noted that adventure travel involves risk. Whilst we make every effort to safeguard clients, we cannot be responsible for personal injury or loss due to the actions of our clients which are beyond our control. We highly recommend that all clients have travel insurance covering illness, injury, loss or damage to personal belongings and not being able to travel on the confirmed date of departure. You should also ensure your travel insurance will cover special circumstances including weather events preventing guests from travelling to their tour departure destination and cancelled flights due to unforeseen circumstances. 


Merchant Fees:

Please be aware operators pass on credit card merchant fees so there is a non-refundable 1% surcharge for VISA and MASTERCARD card purchases.

All ticket/voucher reissues attract a $20 administration fee.


Open Date Vouchers / Gift Certificate:

Shipping Costs are in addition to the ticket price and will be added at check-out. Shipping costs are non-refundable and do not makeup part of the ticket value. 

E-Vouchers incur no shipping fees.

You have 5 years to use the value of the voucher. Seasonal Price Rises will apply if travelling out the current seasons pricing. Vouchers can be exchanged for free up to the full value of the voucher excluding credit card fees and charges.

Cancellations

Client Cancellations:

All cancellations forfeit 25% of the recommended retail price (RRP) - not the discounted/sale price. No cancellations, refunds, or date changes within 7 days of departure date. No shows or client cancellations made within 7 days of departure forfeit 100% of the total ticket price.

Open dated vouchers must book a minimum of 2 weeks prior to departure. 

Transfers between tours can be made at the suppliers discretion, however, it should be noted that supplier fees may apply. Tour transfers also incur a $20 administration fee. 

It is compulsory that all cancellation requests are in writing and sent via email to admin@mr-travel.com. Cancellations attempted via online chat or phone will not be actioned.


Supplier Cancellations:

The Service Operator reserves the right to alter prices, alter itineraries, apply a fuel surcharge, cancel departures, arrange alternative transport and vary itineraries and services if necessary.

All departures and itineraries are subject to weather. Tours may be changed or cancelled for any reason at the discretion of the Service Operator. If the Service Operator has to cancel the trip or activity (prior to departure) and we cannot offer a suitable alternative, then a refund will be given minus a 20% administration fee and any associated card fees. We strongly recommend that you have travel insurance, especially during the wet season.

In the unlikely event of your trip being cancelled or stood down, all guest communication is required to go through our Online Store.


Refunds:

All refunds are in Australian Dollars and must be made to the card of payment. Fraser Tours/Mr Travel is not liable for exchange rate fluctuations or fees, or any other merchant/bank fees associated with domestic and/or international transactions.

Where a full refund is applicable, there is the option to transfer the whole cost of the tour to another tour or “Credit” to avoid the administration fee. A transfer fee of $20 will apply.

You will be emailed confirmation once the refund has been processed. Once the refund has been processed, it may still take time for the banks to clear the amount. Please allow 7-10 business days for the funds to clear into Australian accounts and up to 21 business days for international accounts.


Accountability/Misconduct:

All Service Operators have the right to provide client feedback and to cancel bookings based off of feedback from other Service Operators.

Fraser Tours/Mr Travel will treat this as any normal client cancellation and therefore the cancellation fees stated in the Client Cancellation Policy will apply.

What level of fitness do I need to have for this hike?

This 4-day hike is for advanced, experienced walkers. Walkers will be required to carry all of their own equipment so hiking experience is highly recommended.

Is it safe to hike on K'gari?

Yes, with the safety briefing and itinerary provided by K'gari Walking Tours, it is safe to hike on K'gari. 

They know where their hikers are and have emergency plans in place should something happen.

That being said, hiking is not recommended for single walkers. This hike will only run with a minimum of 2 people.

Are there age restrictions for this walk?

The minimum age for this walk is 12 years. 

Those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent of guardian.

There are no upper age restrictions, so long as walkers are of suitable ability. Walkers with medical conditions should check with an agent before booking.

Can I tailor my own hike if I have a group?

Yes, hikes can be tailored especially for your group of 2-6 people. This would be a private charter tour, which means only your group would be on the hike.

What will the weather conditions be like?

The climate of K'gari is subtropical, with warm daytime temperatures throughout the entire year.

The winter months are from May to August, where the average temperatures are 14-25 C (57-77 degrees F).

Winter is the drier month of the year and it is less likely that you will see much rainfall during walking season. If it does rain, it’s generally short showers.
