FAQs Fraser Island
We have compiled a list of the questions you may want to ask before booking your overnight tour on Fraser Island to help you plan ahead and have the next trip possible.
1. What do I need to take for an overnight tour?
We recommend only packing what you will need including a change of clothing, comfortable walking shoes, swimmers, toiletries, beach towel, sunscreen and a warm jacket for the evenings (seasonal). A large reusable water bottle may also come in a handy while you are exploring your surroundings! You may also like to bring extra snacks, camera and insect repellent. More information on what to bring is online on the tour page itself. All tours will ask that you pay lightly to save on space and ensure there is room for everyone's luggage. Most tours will not take large bags or suitcases, so it's a good idea to store excess luggage before departing for the island. Please note: Bring your current drivers licence if you intend to drive on a tag-along tour.
2. What kind of bag do I put my belongings in?
As we mentioned, most tours will not allow large suitcases due to space restrictions, so we recommend a small overnight bag instead. It's best to pack a soft bag that is easier for packing into the vehicle, There are a number of luggage storage facilities on the mainland, so please ask at your accommodation or tour check-in office if they are able to store your extra bags.
3. What does BYO mean?
A lot of tours mention "BYO" but what does it mean? BYO means 'bring your own alcohol,' meaning you have to bring your own with you on the trip! This isn't a requirement, but if your tour has this option and you do wish to have a few drinks in the evenings, you will have to purchase any alcohol you will want on your tour beforehand. Depending on your tour, there may not be the opportunity to purchase alcohol on the island itself, so make sure you have to with you when you depart for the tour. Only some tours have this option, so make sure you're aware if BYO is allowed. Please note: some tours may not permit glass bottles.
4. What will I sleep on?
Where you will sleep will depend on the tour (camping or resort) you have chosen. On camping tours, you will sleep at a campsite in a tent with a sleeping bag. Please note the cost of this may be included or extra cost to hire, so make sure you find out beforehand. Resort tours will include dorm rooms or private rooms, with several different room types available, including dorm or quad share, double rooms, triple rooms and even apartment style rooms in some cases. Please enquire with your travel agent if you have any questions to make sure you're up to date on your accommodation beforehand. Rest assured, if you have booked an overnight guided or tag-along tour, your accommodation is included.
5. How do I get to Fraser Island?
Most tours will include a pick up/drop off service from certain points on the mainland, often including accommodations, before departing for the island. After the whole tour group is together, the tour will catch a barge from either Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay over to Fraser Island. The main pick up/ drop off points are Hervey Bay, Noosa, Rainbow Beach, Sunshine Coast or the Gold Coast (this information is included on the tour page). There is no bridge to the island, meaning it is only accessible by boat or plane. Please note: some tours include a full comprehensive briefing on the day prior to your tour.
