You can bring both mountain bikes and motorbikes to K’gari (Fraser Island)! It’s just important to be prepared for your bike trip, as this rugged sand island is very remote and wild. From vehicle permits, to ferry transfers, to safety tips and regulations, you should always research and prepare in advance for your epic trip to K’gari.
Here are some useful things to know for bringing a bike to K’gari (Fraser Island)!
You can bring a bicycle to K’gari (Fraser Island), but this might actually be a harder task than it seems. First of all, you’ll want the sturdiest bike you can find, preferably a mountain bike suitable for off-roading. A standard road bicycle won’t be able to handle the rugged sandy tracks on the island.
If you’re hoping to ride your mountain bike on K’gari, you’ll want to also have a 4WD on the island. Though it is possible to ride around parts of the island with a bicycle, it will take ages to cover much ground as the entire island is made of sand!
So pack your bike in with your 4WD so you can drive to the best bike spots in your car and then jump out to bike ride. Having a 4WD is much easier for multi-day K’gari trips as well so you can store all your supplies and gear in the car. If you’re just visiting the island with a bike, you’d have to carry all your gear in a backpack which might be a hassle.

You can only ride a mountain bike on the eastern and western beaches of K'gari (Fraser Island). These long stretches of beach have compact sand and plenty of space for biking. Bicycles are not allowed on the walking tracks of K’gari. This includes the K’gari Great Walk, so unfortunately you won’t be able to bike along this iconic track.
You are technically allowed to bike along K’gari’s inland roads, though it’s not recommended. The inland tracks on the island are made of soft sand that varies in depth, making it easy to slip, slide, fall, or get bogged down. Some of the tracks are narrow and winding as well, so it can be dangerous to bike these when there are 4WD vehicles and buses driving along the tracks as well.
If you’re going to ride a mountain bike on K’gari, stick to the eastern and western beaches and practice good safety tips. Here are some ways to stay safe while mountain biking on K’gari (Fraser Island).
For those driving vehicles on K’gari’s beaches, you can only drive at low tide. A mountain bike is smaller and more nimble than a car, so the rules aren’t as strict for when you can or can’t ride on the beach. However, if the tide is too high, the sand will be soft and wet which isn’t ideal for biking. You’ll have a better experience if you bike at low tide when the sand is compact and dry.
K’gari’s beaches also act as roads for vehicles. 75 Mile Beach is famously known as the “Sand Highway”, where 4WDs can drive up to 80km per hour along the sand. So treat the beach as you would a normal road! Stay alert while biking and always be on the lookout for vehicles and even planes as scenic flights sometimes land on the beach.
While biking on the beach on K’gari, make sure you’re visible on your bike. Wear a high-visibility vest and consider reflective plates or lights on your bike. Also avoid riding after dark or in foggy weather to avoid any accidents.
You can also bring a motorbike to K’gari (Fraser Island). Motorbikes are easier for travelling around the island than bicycles, but they are not as easy as a 4WD car. Hefty, high-clearance 4WDs are still the best way to get around K’gari, as they are the most well-equipped to navigate the soft, sandy tracks around the island. But you can also travel by motorbike if you wish!
If you’re bringing a motorbike to K’gari, you’ll have to follow the same steps as you would for a car. Get a vehicle access permit from Queensland National Parks and book your ferry tickets. Return ferry tickets for motorbikes are around $70 - $75 AUD for both the Inskip Point Barge in Rainbow Beach and the River Heads Barge in Hervey Bay. When you arrive, make sure you follow all the road rules, drive carefully, and check the tide times to ensure you stay safe.
Motorbike safety tips on K’gari are about the same as they are for 4WD vehicles, but they are extra important as you are more exposed on a bike than in a car! Be prepared for your bike trip as the island is very remote and roadside assistance is rare.
Similar to a car, you’ll likely need to reduce the tyre pressure on your motorbike. This gives you more leverage for driving along the sand, which can be difficult at times. The texture of the sand varies around the island, so just make sure you’re able to adjust your tyres as needed.
The island is very remote and mobile phone service isn’t always available, so have everything you need in case of an emergency just in case. That includes a first aid kit, spare fuel, and recovery gear in case you get bogged. You may not have tons of space on a motorbike, but having these materials is essential.
