K’gari (Fraser Island) experiences its wet season from January through March. While the world’s largest sand island boasts a fantastic subtropical climate year-round, the summer months tend to see the most rainfall. This aligns with the wet seasons of other popular Queensland destinations like the Whitsundays, Cairns, and Brisbane.

Despite the rain, visitors to K’gari can still enjoy the adventure of a lifetime. In fact, many activities on the island become even more enjoyable in the rainy summer weather, adding an extra layer of fun. Here’s what you need to know about K’gari’s rainy season.

Should I visit K’gari during the rainy season?

Don’t let the rainy season put you off. This is one of the most popular times of year to visit K’gari! December and early January in particular can be a very busy time in K’gari thanks to Australian school holidays. If you want to make the most of the rainforests, rivers, and lakes, the rainy, summer season is the best time of year to come and visit.

It’s worth keeping in mind that, since this is a popular time of year to come to K’gari, tours will need to be booked in advance to avoid disappointment - and they might have public holiday surcharges.

If you’re hoping to visit at a calmer time of year and enjoy the most comfortable weather conditions, then we’d suggest holding off until spring to visit. While temperatures will be high, the humidity will have calmed down and rainy weather will have passed. Plus, peak holiday season is over, meaning there’s a higher chance of securing a sweet deal.
