Summer is an ideal time to visit as you can sunbathe by Lake McKenzie, float down the Eli Creek River, kayak along the coastline and explore the majestic rainforest. You might even experience an afternoon summer storm after your day of adventure!

In terms of crowds on the island, the holiday season of December and early January is very busy as most Aussies are on school holidays. Travel may be more expensive, and some tours may have public holiday surcharges. But you can still secure great deals if you book in advance! And later in January and February is much cheaper and less crowded.

Winter on K’gari (Fraser Island)

Winter on K'gari (Fraser Island) runs from June to August which are the coolest months of the year. However, compared to southern parts of Australia, winter on K'gari (Fraser Island) is a dream! The daily average temperatures on the island reach 20 degrees Celsius, however the sun is mostly shining throughout winter, making for beautiful days. If you want to experience the island without the crowds, winter is the ideal period for this as it’s the off season.

That doesn’t mean you won’t have as much fun - you can still enjoy the majestic views of the island and indulge in all the adventurous activities during winter. During winter, humpback whales begin migrating along the East Coast around Hervey Bay, making for excellent whale watching on K'gari (Fraser Island).

Autumn on K’gari (Fraser Island)

As the weather begins to cool after summer, temperatures on K'gari (Fraser Island) reach highs of 26 and lows of 14 degrees Celsius throughout autumn. This means the water in the lakes and ocean is still slightly warm enough to enjoy before it gets too chilly. Kayaking, hiking, 4WDing and most of the activities the island has to offer are still on the cards throughout autumn.

Wildlife watching is another unique activity to do during the season before some of the birds go into hibernation for the winter. The cooler weather also makes for superb hiking conditions.

Spring on K’gari (Fraser Island)

Arguably, spring is the best season to visit K'gari (Fraser Island). If you have the luxury of plenty of free time to plan your vacation then August, September, October and November are superb months to consider for a stay on the island. During these months, the average daily temperature is 27 degrees Celsius (with lows of 16). Swimming and hiking are ideal at this time. It's also a great time of year for camping, as you won't get too hot or too cold out in the wilderness. 

Just keep in mind that spring is considered the peak season so be prepared to book your tours in advance so they don't sell out! If you desire to visit gorgeous K'gari (Fraser Island) at a less crowded time, you can choose off-peak days or even winter months.

Whale Watching on K’gari (Fraser Island)
