Swim in Lake McKenzie
At the very top of our K'gari bucket list is the famous Lake McKenzie! This pristine perched lake looks like something out of a dream. The velvety white silica sand and surrounding rainforests create the perfect backdrop for a beach day. With a natural filtration system that keeps this perched lake crystal clear, your Lake McKenzie swim is sure to be a beautiful one.
Spot a dingo
K'gari is home to Australia's purest population of wild dingo! Because these intriguing wild dogs have thrived on the isolated island for many years, they haven't had the chance to breed with normal dogs and evolve over time. So while exploring K'gari, keep your eyes peeled for these gorgeous creatures! You'll often spot them scavenging on the beach at dawn or dusk, and remember to never approach a dingo as they are wild animals.
Walk the boardwalk at Central Station
One of the best things to do on K'gari is stroll along the boardwalk at Central Station. As a former logging station, Central Station is now the best place to explore the magnificent rainforests that grow from the sand on K'gari. Follow the wooden boardwalk that winds through the greenery and crosses over the tranquil Wanggoolba Creek for the best views!
Float down Eli Creek
Grab a colourful floatie and head to Eli Creek for a fun afternoon of floating, swimming, and sunbathing. Eli Creek is a glorious freshwater creek that flows through the rainforest and out to the ocean. The water is clean enough to drink, and it's a popular spot for people of all ages to float, swim, and enjoy the beauty of nature.
See Maheno Shipwreck at sunrise
One of K'gari's most iconic landmarks is the SS Maheno Shipwreck. This colossal vessel shipwrecked on 75 Mile Beach in the early 1900s and still lies there today. The relic makes for incredible photos and is a popular stop on all K'gari tours. Visit at sunrise for the most vibrant natural colours over the shipwreck!
Camp under the stars
One of the best ways to connect with nature on K'gari is camping! With 45 designated camping areas ranging from forest campgrounds to beachfront spaces, you can immerse yourself in the wilderness, watch the stars, and fall asleep to the sounds of the waves or forest. Remember to book your campsites in advance and get a camping permit, and double-check if campfires are allowed at your site (they are only allowed at specific locations on K'gari).
Learn about Butchella history and culture
K'gari's traditional owners are the Butchella people. They named the island "K'gari" because it's their word for paradise, and we are lucky to be able to explore this paradise today! Check out the informational signs that illustrate the Butchella dreamtime stories and history so you can appreciate the original inhabitants of the island.
Drive a 4WD
Anyone who visits K'gari must do so in a 4WD because normal 2WD vehicles are not allowed! But if you get the chance, try getting behind the wheel and experiencing the thrill of beach driving. Whether you're bringing your own 4WD, hiring one, or joining a tag along tour, it's such a blast to drive around the sandy tracks and wide-open beaches of K'gari.
Hike to Lake Wabby
Another K'gari bucket list destination is Lake Wabby. It's the deepest lake on the island and is known for its lovely emerald hue. Surrounded by lush forests and ancient sand dunes, it's one of the most scenic places on K'gari! You can reach Lake Wabby via a moderate rainforest track, which is a great way to work up a sweat before your swim.
Stroll across the Hammerstone Sand Blow
Right next to Lake Wabby lies the Hammerstone Sand Blow, a wide expanse of rippling sand dunes that you must walk across to reach the lake. Venture further away from the lake and you'll feel like you're walking through a remote desert! A stroll across these golden dunes is a magical experience to have on K'gari.
Take a dip in the Champagne Pools
Though it's not recommended to swim in the ocean around K'gari, there is one place where you can do so safely. The Champagne Pools are a set of natural rock pools on the northeast coast of K'gari. Here the rocks block most of the swell and rough waves so you can dip in the salt water with ease. The occasional wave will rush over the side, creating a bubbling effect like a natural pool of champagne!
Hug one of the giant trees in Pile Valley
Pile Valley is a stunning location in the dense rainforests of K'gari where you can spot some seriously incredible trees. K'gari is famous for its magnificent satinay trees that grow out of the sand, many of them expanding to mindblowing heights and widths. Make sure you take a moment to appreciate these giants and try wrapping your arms around their giant trunks. It's a classic K'gari experience!
Spot a whale off the coast (in winter)
If you're visiting K'gari in winter, spend some time whale watching on the coast! Every winter, humpback whales migrate along the East Coast of Australia. Between June and October, K'gari is a hotspot for whale watching. Hang out by the coast with some binoculars and look for the humpback blowholes, fins, or tails! Or book a whale watching tour from Hervey Bay when you return to the mainland.
