K'gari (Fraser Island) is one of Australia's most special destinations. As the largest sand island in the world, this unique and mesmerising place encourages travellers to adventure through the wilderness, disconnect from the stresses of modern life, and reconnect with nature.

Because K'gari is so wild and remote, the easiest way to visit the island is on a tour. Between day trips, guided resort tours, and tag-along camping tours, you can have an epic experience on K'gari without doing much planning yourself. However, the maximum amount of time you can spend on K'gari with a tour is 5 days and 4 nights. If you have your own 4WD and you want to spend a week on K'gari, check out our K'gari (Fraser Island) 7 Day Itinerary!

K'gari (Fraser Island) 7 Day Itinerary

Our carefully curated K'gari (Fraser Island) 7 Day Itinerary encompasses all the area's highlights laid out conveniently. We've done our best to create the perfect 7 day itinerary, but it's important to execute your plans based on the tides. Driving along 75 Mile Beach can only be done 2 hours before or after low tide, so modify this itinerary as needed based on the tide times when you arrive!

Other factors may cause you to change the itinerary as well, such as weather or your personal preferences. Use this K'gari (Fraser Island) 7 Day itinerary as a guideline and feel free to change it as needed! We'll also recommend some places to spend the night for each day, including campsites and cabins or hotel rooms

Day 1 On K'gari (Fraser Island)

After catching the ferry over to K'gari, head to one of Australia's most beautiful destinations, Lake McKenzie! Because this stunning perched lake is centrally located near the middle of the island, it's a great place to begin your K'gari (Fraser Island) 7 day itinerary. Take your time swimming in the crystal clear waters and relaxing on the silky white sand at this famous location.

Next, drive over to Central Station. This popular tourist area has beautiful, forested walking trails and some informational signs about the history of K'gari. There is a camping area at Central Station where you can spend the night, or you can drive over to Eurong Beach Resort to stay in a nice room.

Day 2 On K'gari (Fraser Island)

On day 2, explore some of the less-touristy lakes near the southern end of the island. From Central Station, it's a relatively short drive to Lake Birrabeen! This lovely perched lake is much less crowded than Lake McKenzie, and it's a great place for a swim, kayak, or paddleboard. Then drive further south to Lake Boomanjin, which is the largest perched lake in the world!

After plenty of lake time, head to the coast and catch your first glimpse of K'gari's sand highway, 75 Mile Beach. There are a few nice places to camp around here including Dilli Village and beach camping zones. Or you can rent a cabin or room at Dilli Village or Eurong Beach Resort.

Day 3 On K'gari (Fraser Island)

Today is going to be a fun-filled day on K'gari! Drive north up 75 Mile Beach, admiring the majestic coastal scenery on the way. And be on the lookout for dingos, they often hang out on the beach! Your first stop is Lake Wabby, a massive freshwater lake framed by the golden sand dunes of the Hammerstone Sand Blow. Enjoy a leisurely bushwalk to reach the lake, and have a blast swimming in Lake Wabby's emerald waters and soaking in the otherworldly dune views.

Next, continue up the coast to Eli Creek. Here you can float down the pristine river or have lunch at the picnic area. Just nearby is the Maheno Shipwreck, another iconic K'gari sight. Once you're ready to turn in for the night, you can camp at any of the nearby beach campsites or find a room or powered campsite at Cathedrals on Fraser.

Day 4 On K'gari (Fraser Island)

On day 4 of your K'gari (Fraser Island) 7 day itinerary, continue up the coast to some more unique attractions. Check out the colorful sand formations of the Pinnacles, and consider a short drive inland to Lake Allom. At Lake Allom, you can often spot freshwater turtles from the viewing platform!

Next, continue driving north up 75 Mile Beach towards Indian Head Lookout. This rocky headland offers some specutacular views, particularly at sunrise or sunset. After snapping plenty of photos at Indian Head Lookout, the closest place to spend the night is Beach Camping Zone 7, which is just 10km south from the lookout.

Day 5 On K'gari (Fraser Island)

Continue your exploration of K'gari's northern end on day 5 of your itinerary! Your first stop today will be the Champagne Pools. These natural rock pools are the only place on K'gari where it's considered safe to swim in the ocean. Enjoy splashing around in the salt water and strolling on the golden sands. From the Champagne Pools, it's only a short drive to Waddy Point and Orchid Beach.

Waddy Point is a beautiful headland and campsite, and it's one of the best places to camp on the island. Explore the beaches and forests here, or head north to Orchid Beach. Orchid Beach is a small township that has some great accommodation options if you'd prefer to stay in a cabin or guesthouse. Treat yourself to a nice meal at the Driftwood Bar, or stock up supplies at the Orchid Beach Trading Post.

Day 6 On K'gari (Fraser Island)

It's your last full day on K'gari! Cherish every moment as you continue to explore the island's remote northern end. This is where you'll really escape the crowds, as most guided tours don't have time to head this far north. There are some great freshwater swimming spots up here like Ocean Lake and Orange Creek. You can also take on the Sandy Cape Lighthouse Walk which is about 5km round trip and offers incredible views of the forest, coastline, and historic lighthouse.

Or just have a lazy day hanging out by the pristine and uncrowded beaches that line the coast! You can easily head back to your accommodation or campground in Orchid Beach or Waddy Point for tonight. There are also some beach camping zones around the northern tip of the island.

Day 7 On K'gari (Fraser Island)

As your K'gari (Fraser Island) 7 day itinerary comes to a close, you can use this day to head back home and see any attractions you may have missed if you have time. Driving on K'gari does take longer than expected, especially along the sandy, winding inland tracks. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to reach the ferry!
