The K'gari Great Southern Lakes hike is a 3-day, 2-night expedition through the majestic landscapes of K'gari. You'll traverse wilderness trails from one side of K'gari to the other, slowly making your way through the dense forests and past the magnificent southern lakes. Immerse yourself in nature, swim in secluded freshwater lakes, and camp amidst the tranquil woodlands of the world's largest sand island.
This adventure hike is self-guided, meaning your guides will drop you off at the start of the hike and pick you up at the end. Ferries, 4WD transport to and from the trailheads, camping gear, backpacks, and cooking equipment are provided for you so you can hike with ease!

Day 1 - Lake Boomanjin and Lake Benaroon
- Walking Distance: 13.5km
Start your day in Hervey Bay, where you'll check in at K'gari Walking Tours, board the ferry, and cruise over to the World Heritage-listed K'gari (Fraser Island). Upon arriving, you'll get a 4WD transfer over to Dilli Village where the trail begins. It's time to start walking!
Hike for about 6.3km through the serenity of the rainforest. Arrive at Lake Boomanjin, the largest perched lake in the world. Here you can have lunch and cool off with a swim before hiking another 7.2km to Lake Benaroon. At this beautiful, uncrowded lake you can kick your feet up, make some dinner, go for a sunset swim, and set up camp for the night.
Day 2 - Lake Birrabeen, Lake McKenzie, Basin Lake, and Central Station
- Walking Distance: 14km
Wake up to an invigorating sunrise, fuel up with some breakfast, and get ready for another epic day of walking. It's a 7.5km hike to Central Station, and you'll pass the sandy shores of Lake Birrabeen on the way. At Central Station, you can take a break to eat lunch, explore Pile Valley, and admire the lushness of the dense wilderness.
Next, continue walking through the untouched landscapes of K'gari for 6.6km. Pass the calm waters of Basin Lake and finish your day at Lake McKenzie. Set up at another hiker's campsite and relax with some dinner and stargazing. Don't forget to stroll along the white silica sands of Lake McKenzie and go for a dip in the turquoise waters.
Day 3 - Lake McKenzie to Kingfisher Bay Resort
- Walking Distance: 13.8km
Start your day with an enchanting sunrise over the world-famous Lake McKenzie, enjoying some downtime at this iconic location without all the crowds! Then take on the 13.8km hike to Kingfisher Bay Resort, stopping along the way at the historic McKenzie's Jetty.
You should arrive at Kingfisher Bay Resort at 2pm, just in time to grab a light snack or drink and board the ferry at 2:30pm. Upon arriving back in Hervey Bay at 3:15pm, you'll be picked up and returned to your car at the K'gari Walking Tours office, or to your Hervey Bay accommodation!

The campsites are very basic and the facilities are simple. Use your swims in the lakes as showers and make sure you bring water purification tablets or a filtering water bottle so you can have clean drinking water throughout the hike. You'll be preparing your own meals and setting up your own campsites, but K'gari Walking Tours will provide most of the essential gear!

Terms and Conditions
Important Information:
- This tour includes around 45km of walking and is suitable for hikers with a moderate fitness level and walking experience. You will be carrying your own equipment!
- Please wear good quality hiking shoes with support
- Operates between March and October
- There are limited facilities at the campsites (compost toilets and limited running water)
- There is limited mobile service on K'gari. Adventure hikers will be supplied with a SPOT GEN 3 satellite GPS messenger to contact base camp in case of an emergency.
Your Responsibilities:
You must reconfirm all booked tours prior to travel as specified on your voucher. If applicable, notes such as dietary requirements, pick-up locations and additional fees should also be confirmed at this time. Reconfirmations cannot be actioned through Fraser Tours / Mr Travel, and must be done so directly through the Service Operator as specified on each ticket.
It is your responsibility to notify us of ticket discrepancies. Please read through the details on your voucher thoroughly to ensure all details such as passenger names, ages and dates of travel on vouchers are correct.
It is the responsibility of all passengers travelling to advise both your travel agent at the time of booking and vessel check-in agent before boarding of any medical conditions including food allergies you may suffer from.
You need to allow adequate time to check-in prior to the specified departure time.
Prices/Extra Costs:
All prices are stated in Australian dollars and include GST. Surcharges over peak holiday seasons may apply.
The Service Operator reserves the right to alter prices and extra costs. Extra costs may include EMC fees, Stingersuit/Wetsuit Hire, Luggage Storage, Insurance, Linen Hire, National Park Fees, Fuel Levies, Dietary Fees, etc. Bonds may also apply.
We will also endeavour to communicate these extra costs with you at the time of booking, and on your ticket. However, it is your responsibility to confirm which (if any) additional costs apply with each Service Operator upon reconfirming your trip.
Travel Risk/Insurance:
It should be noted that adventure travel involves risk. Whilst we make every effort to safeguard clients, we cannot be responsible for personal injury or loss due to the actions of our clients which are beyond our control. We highly recommend that all clients have travel insurance covering illness, injury, loss or damage to personal belongings and not being able to travel on the confirmed date of departure. You should also ensure your travel insurance will cover special circumstances including weather events preventing guests from travelling to their tour departure destination and cancelled flights due to unforeseen circumstances.
Merchant Fees:
Please be aware operators pass on credit card merchant fees so there is a non-refundable 1% surcharge for VISA and MASTERCARD card purchases.

All ticket/voucher reissues attract a $20 administration fee.
Open Date Vouchers / Gift Certificate:
Shipping Costs are in addition to the ticket price and will be added at check-out. Shipping costs are non-refundable and do not makeup part of the ticket value.
E-Vouchers incur no shipping fees.
You have 5 years to use the value of the voucher. Seasonal Price Rises will apply if travelling out the current seasons pricing. Vouchers can be exchanged for free up to the full value of the voucher excluding credit card fees and charges.
Cancellations
Client Cancellations:
All cancellations forfeit 25% of the recommended retail price (RRP) - not the discounted/sale price. No cancellations, refunds, or date changes within 7 days of departure date. No shows or client cancellations made within 7 days of departure forfeit 100% of the total ticket price.
Open dated vouchers must book a minimum of 2 weeks prior to departure.
Transfers between tours can be made at the suppliers discretion, however, it should be noted that supplier fees may apply. Tour transfers also incur a $20 administration fee.
It is compulsory that all cancellation requests are in writing and sent via email to admin@mr-travel.com. Cancellations attempted via online chat or phone will not be actioned.
Supplier Cancellations:
The Service Operator reserves the right to alter prices, alter itineraries, apply a fuel surcharge, cancel departures, arrange alternative transport and vary itineraries and services if necessary.
All departures and itineraries are subject to weather. Tours may be changed or cancelled for any reason at the discretion of the Service Operator. If the Service Operator has to cancel the trip or activity (prior to departure) and we cannot offer a suitable alternative, then a refund will be given minus a 20% administration fee and any associated card fees. We strongly recommend that you have travel insurance, especially during the wet season.
In the unlikely event of your trip being cancelled or stood down, all guest communication is required to go through our Online Store.
Refunds:
All refunds are in Australian Dollars and must be made to the card of payment. Fraser Tours/Mr Travel is not liable for exchange rate fluctuations or fees, or any other merchant/bank fees associated with domestic and/or international transactions.
Where a full refund is applicable, there is the option to transfer the whole cost of the tour to another tour or “Credit” to avoid the administration fee. A transfer fee of $20 will apply.
You will be emailed confirmation once the refund has been processed. Once the refund has been processed, it may still take time for the banks to clear the amount. Please allow 7-10 business days for the funds to clear into Australian accounts and up to 21 business days for international accounts.
Accountability/Misconduct:
All Service Operators have the right to provide client feedback and to cancel bookings based off of feedback from other Service Operators.

Are there guides on this hike?
This is an adventure hike, so there are no guides leading the way. You'll be dropped off at the trailhead and picked up at the end, with maps, itineraries, camping gear, and cooking equipment supplied. So it's an independent adventure! For a more hands-on, guided hike with assistance try a pack-free walking tour.
Are there any age restrictions?
There is an age limit of 12 years and over. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There are no upper age restrictions for walkers with suitable ability, however walkers with medical conditions should check with the operator before booking.
Is there any mobile phone service on the walk?
K'gari is a remote island and there is rarely internet or mobile phone service. For your adventure hikes, K'gari Walking Tours provides a SPOT GEN 3 which is a satellite GPS messenger that can send updated locational information back to base or be activated in an emergency situation.
