Snorkelling on K'gari
The bad thing about snorkelling on K'gari is that you really can’t. Not in any good way really. Technically speaking, you can snorkel in the lakes and creeks on the island, but oftentimes due to their purity, there really isn’t much to see as most places are void of fish and plants!
The ocean surrounding K'gari is not snorkel-friendly. The surf here is often very aggressive, not to mention the currents and the wildlife! There is a pretty big resident shark population around the island, and no reefs, so you really wouldn’t even want to attempt snorkelling here anyways. In fact, when visiting the island, the ocean is off-limits for swimming or any other water activities aside from fishing, which can be done from the beach.
The best way to enjoy the water on K'gari is just by swimming and relaxing in the many lakes, creeks and famous seaside Champagne Pools. Visitors may want to bring along a snorkel set to see what’s underneath the surface at its lake and creeks, but it probably won’t be the wild underwater adventure you are seeking from snorkelling.
If you do want a thrilling snorkel experience, we suggest heading north to the Whitsundays or Cairns, where you can enjoy a tropical environment teeming with corals and colourful marine life. As you make your way north you will find warmer waters that support beautiful conditions that you can enjoy worry-free, so we recommend holding on and enjoying K'gari for what it is and move onto snorkelling later.
