Do I Need a 4WD For K'gari?
Yes, only 4WD vehicles are allowed on K'gari (Fraser Island). The island is made up of entirely sand, so regular 2WD vehicles cannot handle the soft yet rugged terrain. If you don't have your own 4WD vehicle already, you can hire one for your trip to the island. The only other alternative, for those who aren't comfortable driving on K'gari, is to book a guided tour!
4WD hire is perfect for independent travellers who want to explore the island at their own pace. But if you'd prefer not to drive, a guided tour is still an amazing way to explore. You can even book a tag along tour, which is fully guided but lets you drive the 4WD if you want!

K'gari Campsites
There are 45 QPWS campsites provided for public use on K’gari. Locations vary from pristine beachside areas to remote bush camping. If you are travelling with children under 14 years old it is important to consider dingo safety and it is recommended that you choose a campsite with a dingo fence such as Central Station, Dundubara, Waddy Point or Lake Boomanjin. You cannot free camp and must book your campsites in advance!
Camping Permits
Camping permits are required for all QPWS campsites and must be purchased before setting up camp on K'gari. This means you will need to plan the date(s) you will be at your campsite(s) of choice and book before you arrive as mobile phone coverage is limited on the Island. Camping permits are $7.25 per adult per night and can be purchased online, by phone, or through one of the 52 booking offices on the mainland.

If you do decide to hire a 4wd it is important to plan your days as travel times can vary greatly depending on track conditions. Travellers need to take into account tide times, weather conditions and distances to campsites.
