Do I Need A License To 4WD On K'gari (Fraser Island)?

Yes, you need a standard driver's license to drive a 4WD on K'gari (Fraser Island). Although K'gari is composed of mainly sand tracks, normal Australian road rules apply. You must keep to the left, drive cautiously, and obey the speed limits (30km per hour on inland tracks and 80km per hour on 75 Mile Beach).

In addition to obeying the usual road rules, you must have a valid driver's license to drive on K'gari (Fraser Island)! Your license does not have to be Australian. If you're a traveler in Australia, you can drive on your foreign license, with the allowed time frames for doing so varying between states. Ensure your license is valid and does not expire. K'gari (Fraser Island) is in Queensland, so if you're unsure about the state's foreign license rules, check the QLD Government website

Do I Need A License To Hire A 4WD?

If you do not already have your own 4WD, you'll need to hire one for your trip to K'gari (Fraser Island). Only 4WD vehicles are allowed on the island due to the difficult terrain! You do need a license to hire a 4WD on K'gari, whether it be international or Australian. But some hire companies have extra regulations in place, simply because hiring a vehicle is a big responsibility and they want to ensure you will be smart and safe while adventuring around the island.

Many 4WD hire companies require drivers to be at least 21 years of age. They also want you to have had your license for at least 12 months. These rules are just an extra safety precaution to ensure that any drivers on K'gari are experienced, knowledgeable, and responsible. Driving on K'gari is not to be taken lightly! Even if you're having a blast with your friends, you always have to drive with care and make sure you keep yourself and everyone else in the car safe.

Do I Need A License To Drive On A K'gari Tag-Along Tour?

You do need a license to drive on a K'gari tag-along tour. Similar to 4WD hire, most tag-along tours require that drivers have a license that has been valid for at least 12 months. They also require drivers to be at least 21 years of age. If you do not meet these requirements, you can still enjoy the tour! You just won't be able to sign up as a driver.

Tag-along tours are amazing because they allow you to be a driver, a passenger, or both, So if you're nervous about driving a 4WD on K'gari, or you don't meet the requirements, you can just sit back and relax as a passenger. Or if you're a driver, you don't have to drive the entire time and you can swap with other registered drivers on the tour.

Other Things To Do Before Your K'gari 4WD Adventure

If you have a valid license and are at least 21 years of age, you are free to hire a 4WD or drive in a tag-along tour! Tag-along tours are all-inclusive so you don't have to worry about any extra logistics or permits. But if you're hiring a 4WD or taking your own vehicle to the island, there are a few other important things to know before you hit the road.

The first is vehicle permits. All vehicles on K'gari need a vehicle permit from Queensland National Parks. If you plan on camping, you also need a camping permit. Both of these can be booked online. You'll also need to organize your own ferry crossings, so make sure you book your ferry tickets in advance as well.

Another super important thing to know before driving on K'gari is the tide times. You cannot drive on the beach within 2 hours of high tide because it's too risky. Check the tide times in advance and plan your itinerary around low tide. When the tide is high, stick to the inland tracks and attractions such as lakes and rainforests. When the tide is low, feel free to travel along the beach to attractions like Eli Creek, Maheno Shipwreck, Pinnacles, and Indian Head Lookout!
