Fraser Island Permits and Ferry Guide

Planning an adventure to K’gari (Fraser Island)? Learn to 4WD on the longest sand highway in the world, swim in pristine freshwater lakes and camp in some truly unique spots under the stars - get ready for the trip of a lifetime, the rugged yet incredibly scenic landscape of Fraser Island awaits!

Here’s what you need to know about permits for driving and camping in the Great Sandy National Park and vehicle access to Fraser Island by ferry.

Fraser Island Vehicle Access Permits

If you’re planning on taking your car to Fraser Island you must purchase a Vehicle Access Permit from Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) before you arrive. 

Fraser Island only:
1 month or less duration = $53.65*
More than 1 month duration (up to 1 year) = $270*

Fraser Island + Cooloola Recreation Area (20% discount):
1 month or less = $86.15*
More than 1 month (up to 1 year) = $432.30*

To book a Vehicle Acess Permit, you can:

Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive a vehicle access tag with your booking number, vehicle registration number, name and date either in person at the time of booking or via email if you booked online. These tags must be placed on the dashboard of your vehicle. Park Rangers check access tags daily.

Fraser Island Camping Permits

If you are planning on camping during your time on K'gari you must also purchase camping permits in addition to your vehicle access permit from QPWS. Camping fees are site-specific and can be booked up for 6 months in advance. It is highly recommended that camping permits are purchased before arriving on Fraser Island as popular camping spots book out fast during peak periods and mobile reception on the island is very limited and cannot be relied upon.

Camping fees:

  • $6.75* per person per night, or
  • $27.00* per family per night - A family is classified as 2 adults and up to 6 children. Children under five years old camp for free.

Fraser Island Vehicle Ferries

There are three daily car and passenger ferry services to K'gari departing from River Heads (20 minutes south of Hervey Bay) and Inskip Point (near Rainbow Beach). The departure point you choose will depend on whether you are self-driving Fraser Island or if you are joining a tour group.  For more information, you can read our article on the differences in arrival points on Fraser Island.

K'gari vehicle ferry prices and timetables vary according to vehicle size and time of year so it is best to check directly with the carrier for the most up-to-date information.

Kingfisher Bay Ferry
Departing River Heads: 50 minutes to Kingfisher Bay 

  • Off-peak: Starting from $110 for a one-way and $180 for a return ticket (standard 4WD)
  • Peak: Starting from $130 for a one-way and $205 for a return ticket (standard 4WD)

Departing River Heads: 30 minutes to Wanggoolba Creek

  • Off-peak: Starting from $110 for a one-way and $180 for a return ticket (standard 4WD)

TOP TIP: Return ferry tickets are significantly cheaper than one-way options so always try to book a return ticket when possible.
