Hook Point, K'gari (Fraser Island)
Hook Point is known as the southern gateway to K'gari (Fraser Island). There are a few ways to get to the world's largest sand island, located off the coast of southeast Queensland. If you're coming to K'gari from Rainbow Beach, you'll most likely take the Inskip Point Ferry over to Hook Point. From there, you can continue your exploration of the island! Here are some things you might want to know about Hook Point on K'gari (Fraser Island)!
About Hook Point, K'gari (Fraser Island)
Hook Point is just one section of the massive, rugged, and beautiful K'gari, also known as the world's largest sand island. The indigenous name for Hook Point is Torerr, as given by the Butchella People who are the traditional owners of K'gari.
Hook Point is one of the few gateways to the island for those arriving by ferry. There are only 3 ferry terminals on K'gari (Fraser Island), with two of them located on the island's western shore. These are the Kingfisher Bay Ferry and the Wanggoolba Creek Ferry, both of which depart from River Heads in Hervey Bay.
On the south of K'gari (Fraser Island), you'll find Hook Point. This is the arrival point for the Inskip Point Ferry which departs from Inskip Point in Rainbow Beach. So travellers visiting K'gari from Rainbow Beach will most likely arrive at Inskip Point!
What is there to do at Hook Point?
Other than catching the ferry over to Hook Point, there is not much to do on this southern corner of K'gari (Fraser Island). It's just dense, wild forest and there aren't many lakes, creeks, or natural landmarks down here. You shouldn't swim at Hook Point, as there are no easily accessible freshwater swimming spots. And swimming anywhere in the ocean off the coast of K'gari is notoriously dangerous because of the riptides and lack of lifeguards.
Most travellers just use Hook Point as a starting point for exploring the highlights of the island further north! However, there is one campground just a short drive away from Hook Point on the island's southwest shores, Coolooloi Campground. It's a very remote campground with few other tourists that offers nice fishing and wildlife spotting. The water here is calmer because it's on the western shore, making it great for water sports!
