You can get to K'gari (Fraser Island) using a combination of flights, buses, shuttles, and ferries. The first step is getting yourself to one of the nearby cities including Brisbane or Noosa. From there, you can get a bus to Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach, the two main tourist towns leading to the island. Next, get to the ferry station using either a shuttle offered by your tour or accommodation or a taxi. Then catch the ferry to K'gari (Fraser Island)! First Stop: Brisbane Or Noosa

If you're travelling to K'gari (Fraser Island) by public transport from far away, you'll first want to get to Brisbane or NoosaBrisbane is the capital of Queensland and has a huge range of flights from elsewhere in Australia every day. From Brisbane, it's about 3 hours to get to Rainbow Beach and almost 4 hours to get to Hervey Bay. 

Noosa puts you a bit closer to Rainbow Beach and Hervey Bay. You'll want to fly into Sunshine Coast Airport, which is about 30 minutes from Noosa. It's just a 1.5 hour drive from Noosa to Rainbow Beach, and 2.5 hours to Hervey Bay. If you're already travelling Australia by land and don't plan on flying, you can skip this step!

Second Stop: Hervey Bay Or Rainbow Beach

Whether you fly into Brisbane or Noosa, you can catch a public bus to get to Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach. Greyhound Buses and Premier Buses are both reliable and affordable options that allow you to hop on and hop off at various destinations around Australia. So jump on a bus, put on some tunes, and hit the road!

Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach are both small coastal towns that offer tours to K'gari (Fraser Island). You can't go wrong with beginning your journey in either one! Hervey Bay is known for its amazing whale watching, and Rainbow Beach is known for its coastal cliffs, sand dunes, and calm lagoons that are perfect for water sports

Third Stop: River Heads Ferry Or Inskip Point Ferry

The next stop on your public transport journey to K'gari (Fraser Island) is the ferry.  If you're departing from Hervey Bay, you'll take the River Heads Ferry to the island. If you're departing from Rainbow Beach, you'll take the Inskip Point Ferry. Both ferry stations are just a short drive from the towns themselves. 

If you've booked a tour to K'gari (Fraser Island), complimentary transport to the ferry terminal will most likely be included. Just double-check with your tour operator!
