Brisbane to the Fraser Coast
The Fraser Coast is accessible from all major cities in Australia, depending on your choice of transport. Brisbane is a major city which most people leave from due to the convenience of a large international and domestic airport, from which there are several ways to travel.
The Fraser Coast, which is where you can access the famous Fraser Island, is situated on the outskirts north of Brisbane. It is within driving distance and would take around 3 hours from the city by car. It's a direct 263 kilometres up the Bruce Highway, Queensland's major highway. Fortunately, the drive is beautiful and scenic as you head toward Rainbow Beach or onto Hervey Bay. Many people rent a car to do the drive or opt for another mode of transportation, including flying, bussing or grabbing the train.
If you don't have a vehicle or are on a budget, there are a few major bus companies that drive from Brisbane to the Fraser Coast, including Greyhound Australia and Premier. Both depart from Brisbane regularly, with Greyhound running daily transfers from the Sunshine Coast.
If you are leaving from Brisbane to head to the Fraser Coast by plane, you can expect a flight from Brisbane takes approximately 40 minutes, with Qantas operating daily flight to Hervey Bay directly.
Those hoping to head to the Fraser Coast can also take Queensland Rail, which travels several times a week.
Once you arrive on the Fraser Coast, many people will head to Fraser Island, which is the main attraction for the area. Getting there is easy, and tours depart from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach, both of which are close to the island. From Hervey Bay, guests will grab a ferry from River Heads and take a 20 minute boat ride across to the island. There is also a barge crossing from Inskip Point, near Rainbow Beach where many guests cross to the island. There are tours that offer tag-along with a camping option, or a tag-along and resort option - both of which give you the opportunity to drive on the island. Guests can also choose to rent their own vehicle and do their own tour, camping or staying at a resort along the way. However, there are many guided tours available where you are guided around by a driver that will allow you to explore Fraser Island and all it has on offer.
