Can I book a tour once I’m on Fraser Island?
This is a commonly asked question by people who are driving their own 4X4 over to Fraser Island, and one that often leaves people in the lurch once they arrive. Before deciding whether or not to book a tour over to Fraser Island, there are some things to consider if you want to enjoy all that Fraser has to offer.
There are many tours to Fraser Island, from departure cities such as Brisbane, Noosa, Rainbow Beach and Hervey Bay. But what if you’ve got your own vehicle and want to visit K’gari on your own? And can you book a tour once you land on the island? The short answer is, your options will be very limited once you land on the largest sand island in the world.
Fraser Island requires permits to visit, and these rules are very strict and heavily enforced once you’re there, being a world heritage listed site. If you’re self-driving over, you will only be allowed to bring a 4WD due to the sand tracks. Once you arrive, if you aren’t comfortable driving on the sand we recommend staying in one of the resorts on the island, King Fisher Bay Resort, or Eurong Resort. You can access King Fisher Bay Resort from Hervey Bay, and the only tour you’re likely to get on is their “Beauty Spots” tour that takes you on a day tour to the highlights of the island.
Another option is to add on a scenic flight, which will run about $80, however, this must be booked on the day before or the morning of your guided bus or tag-along tour. We highly recommend pre-booking a tour prior to heading over to Fraser Island, in order to maximise your experience there. There are plenty of things to consider before self-driving, and you can read more about them here.
