Where is Fraser Island?
Fraser Island
Fraser Island, which is the largest sand island in the world, is located 200 kilometres north of Brisbane, off the East Coast of Queensland, Australia. It is a long narrow island and is found near the mainland, with some parts only 1 kilometre offshore. In terms of Australia, it is found almost at the mid-way point between the most Northern and Southern points. It is accessible only by boat or plane, as there is no bridge to the island, with several departure points to the island including Inskip Point and River Heads.
Fraser Coast
Fraser Island is a heritage-listed island because of its uniqueness as the largest sand island in the world. It has diverse forest and lake formations, as well as a resident dingo population, which also make it a very special place to visit. It is found in the region of the Fraser Coast and is located opposite Hervey Bay and Maryborough from the mainland coast.
Reaching the Island from the Mainland
To reach Fraser Island, you must do so by getting a ferry, barge, or plane to the island. The most popular route to reach Fraser is by ferry or barge from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach, as many visitors have a vehicle or book a guided tour of the island. Due to its sandy tracks, vehicles going to the island must be four-wheel drive so that they are able to handle the roadways. There are many tours that go to the island daily, with both overnight and day trips available. Tours depart from Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Noosa, Rainbow Beach and Hervey Bay. Guests can choose from guided tours or tag-along tours, depending on if they want to drive on the island, or if they would prefer to see it from a larger 4WD bus.
