Are there any Koalas on Fraser Island
Despite an abundance of favourable trees to support them, there are no koalas on Fraser Island.
There are a couple of theories on this. One is that they once existed many years ago and were a food source for the indigenous Butchalla and hunted to extinction.
The second theory is that they never existed on Fraser Island. There has never been any skeletal evidence of koalas found on the island so the latter is most likely.
As there has never been any evidence of Koalas on the island we believe this is the reason Governments have decided to not introduce the species to what is already a very delicate ecosystem
