The 8 Best Beaches On K'gari (Fraser Island)

Before we dive into our list of the best beaches on K'gari (Fraser Island), note that K'gari has a unique landscape and not all of these beaches are what you might expect. There are some stunning beaches that run the coastline of the island, where the Pacific Ocean laps against the shore. But not all of K'gari's seaside beaches are easily accessible or safe for swimming. K'gari also has several gorgeous lakes and creeks which may not provide access to saltwater, but they have their own sandy shores that are a safer option for swimming.

We'll provide all the details for each of these amazing locations so you know what to expect and whether you can swim or not. Whether you're visiting the island on a guided tour, with a hired 4WD, or in your own vehicle, make sure you add these glorious K'gari beaches to your bucket list!

1. 75 Mile Beach

The largest and most famous beach on K'gari is 75 Mile Beach. This massive expanse of golden sand covers almost the entire length of K'gari's Eastern Shore! With such an iconic reputation, you may be surprised to find out that 75 Mile Beach is actually best for driving and camping as opposed to sunbathing and swimming.

75 Mile Beach also acts as K'gari's "Sand Highway", meaning 4WD vehicles can drive along the sand like a normal road. This makes it one of the coolest places for beach driving in Australia, but it's not exactly a safe place to sunbathe. The strong ocean currents also make 75 Mile Beach a hazardous place for swimming. So this beach is perfect for sightseeing, stargazing, sunrise-watching, dingo-spotting, driving, and camping, but a typical beach day is better spent at one of the lakes on this list!

2. Lake McKenzie

Lake McKenzie is the most popular perched lake on the island. Because it is safe, serene, and breathtakingly beautiful, it's home to one of the best beaches on K'gari! Lined with velvety soft, white silica sand, Lake McKenzie makes for a heavenly beach day. The lake's water is pristine, with a light turquoise hue near the shore and a deep sapphire hue further out.

People of all ages can enjoy a beach day at Lake McKenzie. Bring some inflatables and float along the glassy surface, or bring some beach toys and make sandcastles with the little ones. The water is flat, shallow, and safe for kids, and the scenery is so gorgeous that it makes for some once-in-a-lifetime photos!

3. Lake Wabby

Lake Wabby offers a different lake experience than Lake McKenzie, but it's also one of the coolest beaches on K'gari. As K'gari's deepest lake, Lake Wabby is huge, emerald-coloured, and shaped like a half-moon. The water is refreshing and deep, making it an amazing place to swim and splash around. However, the sandy shore has quite a steep drop-off, so it's not the best place to bring young kids for a swim.

But if you're looking for a beach with interesting scenery and an epic swimming hole, Lake Wabby is the place to be! You have to hike for around 30 minutes through the bush to reach the lake, so you'll really feel like you've earned your swim. Lake Wabby is also situated next to the Hammerstone Sand Blow, which has rippling layers of ancient sand dunes that provide an otherworldly landscape.

4. Orchid Beach

Those looking for a secluded beach to escape the crowds can head up to Orchid Beach! Located on the northeast shore of K'gari, Orchid Beach is a small township with a few cosy resorts and guesthouses. There is also a bar, restaurant, and shop where you can stock up on essentials

Because Orchid Beach lies off the standard K'gari tourist trail, guided tours don't come here and only a handful of independent travellers make the journey. The soft sands of Orchid Beach are a beautiful place to stroll, sunbathe, and dip your toes in the water. But the ocean around Orchid Beach is still not recommended for swimming because of the strong currents. Visit the nearby Ocean Lake, Orange Creek, or Champagne Pools if you want to swim!

5. Lake Birrabeen

Another beach on K'gari that offers a secluded, non-touristy atmosphere is Lake Birrabeen. Located in central K'gari near the south, it's just a 40-minute drive south of Lake McKenzie. So if Lake McKenzie is a bit too crowded for your liking, enjoy a quieter beach day down at Lake Birrabeen instead!

This large and peaceful perched lake also has silky white sand that feels like heaven under your feet. With dense surrounding bushland and calm, refreshing water, Lake Birrabeen is a popular spot for bushwalking, kayaking or paddleboarding, and enjoying family-friendly beach games on the sand.

6. Waddy Point

The coastal gem of Waddy Point is one of the best beaches on K'gari for camping. Located on a stunning headland, Waddy Point overlooks the northeast shore of K'gari and is a fabulous place to set up camp for a few days. The Waddy Point Campground has beachfront campsites, larger bush sites for caravans and trailers, a dingo fence, coin-operated hot showers, and fire pits.

As with the other eastern beaches on K'gari, swimming is not recommended at Waddy Point. The ocean is just too unpredictable here, but it's still a top beach location on K'gari. Make sure you secure your camping reservation in advance as this spot fills up quickly!

7. Eli Creek

Eli Creek is a tranquil freshwater creek that winds through K'gari's wilderness and runs out to the ocean. It's located right on the edge of 75 Mile Beach, near the famous Maheno Shipwreck. Eli Creek is often included in K'gari day tours and overnight tours, and it's an amazing place for a freshwater swim.

There is a sandy section of 75 Mile Beach that sits at the eastern side of Eli Creek, before the creek reaches the ocean. Though it's technically part of the same sand dunes as 75 Mile Beach, it is a safe spot for relaxing away from all the 4WD traffic. When you're ready to cool off, you can just walk inland to the creek, which makes a safer alternative to swimming in the ocean. Eli Creek also has a scenic boardwalk that offers lovely views of the landscape.

8. Champagne Pools

Last but not least on our list of the best K'gari beaches? The Champagne Pools! This unique location on the northeast shore of K'gari is one of the few places on the island where it's safe to swim in the ocean. The Champagne Pools are formed by a barrier of rocks that block the swell of the sea and create an epic swimming hole. You should still be careful in the pools and avoid swimming during large swells, as rogue waves can sometimes create turbulence.

But in decent weather, the Champagne Pools are a wonderful place to float around and soak in the salt water. Surrounding the pools, a sandy beach invites travellers to hang out, have a picnic, and enjoy K'gari. You can have the optimal beach day here at low tide when more sand is exposed.

Can You Swim On K'gari (Fraser Island)?

As you can see, there are plenty of places to swim on K'gari (Fraser Island) if you avoid the ocean! With the exception of the Champagne Pools, much of K'gari's coastline is framed by rough waves with strong currents that are not ideal for swimming or water sports. If you want to swim on K'gari, opt for the freshwater lakes and creeks!

The water around K'gari's northern and western shores is much calmer as it's protected from the raw power of the ocean. However, these places are surrounded by very soft sand and remote wilderness. The beaches over here are only accessible with a high-clearance 4WD, and it's a long drive to get there from both ferry locations. Tours don't travel to this part of the island, so you can only visit with your own 4WD. As long as you have enough time, recovery gear to help if you get bogged, and an adventurous spirit, you can explore more of the remote beaches on the western side of K'gari!
