Australian Drop Bears And Planning Your K’gari Adventures
What are drop bears? Are they real? Where in Australia do they live? Do I need to worry about them on my K’gari (Fraser Island) adventures? Fear not, our local travel experts are here to answer all your pressing questions about the elusive drop bears in Australia!
What are drop bears?
Drop Bears are Australian marsupials that look similar to koalas, but they have sharp fangs and claws. They are like an intimidating, carnivorous version of the beloved cuddly koala. The name “Drop Bears” comes from the way drop bears hunt. Like koalas, drop bears are tree-dwellers, but instead of eating Eucalyptus leaves, they drop down from the trees on top of their prey. Drop bears are a terrifying notion, but you don’t have to fear them as much as you might think!
Are drop bears real?
Drop bears are not real! They are fictitious creatures designed to scare tourists in Australia, and pretty much every local Aussie seems to be in on the joke. Everyone loves the adorable koala, but many tourists are aware of Australia’s reputation for having a few deadly animals. So Australians decided to invent the deadly version of the koala and freak out the tourists. However, drop bears are nothing but an urban legend!

Many travellers have been told to keep an eye out for drop bears on their K’gari (Fraser Island) adventures. The magnificent, towering trees of the K’gari forests are the perfect habitat for drop bears to stalk their prey. At least, that is what the hoax would lead you to believe!
