K'gari (Fraser Island) Permits and Ferry Guide

Here’s what you need to know about permits for driving and camping in the Great Sandy National Park, as well as ferry information.
K'gari (Fraser Island) Vehicle Access Permits
If you’re planning on taking your car to K'gari (Fraser Island) you must purchase a Vehicle Access Permit from Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) before you arrive.
K'gari (Fraser Island) only:
1 month or less duration = $57.80
More than 1 month duration (up to 1 year) = $291
K'gari (Fraser Island) + Cooloola Recreation Area (20% discount):
1 month or less = $92.85
More than 1 month (up to 1 year) = $466

To book a Vehicle Acess Permit, you can:
- Visit the QPWS website
- Visit a QPWS booking office
- Call 13 QGOV (13 74 68).
Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive a vehicle access tag with your booking number, vehicle registration number, name, and date either in person at the time of booking or via email if you booked online. These tags must be placed on the dashboard of your vehicle. Park Rangers check access tags daily.

K'gari (Fraser Island) Camping Permits
If you are planning on camping during your time on K'gari you must also purchase camping permits in addition to your vehicle access permit from QPWS. When you pay for your camping permit online or in person, you also have to list the campsites you'll be staying at and the dates you'll be there. Campsites can be reserved up to 6 months in advance. Also note that you can't change campsites on the island unless you have amended your booking at least 2 days prior.
Camping fees:
- $7.25 per person per night, or
- $29 per family per night - A family is classified as 2 adults and up to 6 children. Children under five years old camp for free.

- Visit a QPWS booking office
- Call 13 QGOV (13 74 68).

K'gari (Fraser Island) Vehicle Ferries
There are three daily car and passenger ferry services to K'gari departing from River Heads (20 minutes south of Hervey Bay) and Inskip Point (near Rainbow Beach). The departure point you choose will depend on whether you are self-driving or if you are joining a tour group. K'gari vehicle ferry prices and timetables vary according to vehicle size and time of year so it is best to check directly with the carrier for the most up-to-date information.

TOP TIP: Return ferry tickets are significantly cheaper than one-way options so always try to book a return ticket when possible.
