As a general rule, dingoes are not considered to be a 'safe' animal to encounter. Dingoes are generally a non-aggressive species, but have been known to attack humans, pets and livestock. While they are naturally wary and timid around people and will more often than not run away if they sense people approaching, there have been recorded negative interactions between this wild dog species and humans. 

You can never be too safe if you encounter a dingo in the wild. As the biggest hunter and apex predator in Australia, they are considered to be dangerous. Fraser Island has a large population of around 200 individuals, and are often spotted by visitors to the island. The best defence against dingoes to be dingo safe. This means being smart and aware of your surroundings while on the island. This includes travelling in groups (the larger the better as it makes them less likely to attack), never feeding dingoes, proper disposal and storage of food or rubbish, staying with arms reach of children in case a dingo wanders too close and camping inside of fenced areas. 

Dingoes are opportunities hunters. You will often see photos of them eating just about anything you can imagine in the Australian landscape - sharks, kangaroos, coconuts, birds, fish, roadkill and more. Their diet normally consists of small game, fruit, plants and carrion, but they will attempt to tackle just about anything to satisfy their hunger. They are the largest predator in Australia and are considered to be at the top of the food chain. 

Dingoes are a wild dog that is found all over Australia. It has a resident population on Fraser Island that is often spotted during tours to the island. They are mostly sandy brown in colour and are the size of a medium - large domestic dog. If you see a dog on Fraser Island, it has to be a dingo, as all domestic dogs are banned from visiting the island!
