K'gari travellers love to go to for a refreshing dip in the crystal clear and pristine freshwater found all over the island. So, before you head out on your 4WD adventure and create your best travel memories, you should know the top lake locations you’ll be visiting by 4WD!

Lake Mackenzie

What is Lake Mackenzie like?

It’s a major and top favourite destination of local and international travellers alike. All the 4WD tours stop by Lake Mackenzie because of its white soft silica sands and pristine water which is purely from rainfall, perfect for a refreshing afternoon swim!

How to get to Lake Mackenzie

Lake Mackenzie is easily accessible from K’gari Beach Resort or Kingfisher Bay Resort and all our 4WD tours stop by Lake Mackenzie! If you’re coming from Kingfisher Bay Resort, just drive southwest towards Cornwells Road or the ferry terminal for 4km.

Then turn right once you reach Northern Road and drive 6km further. Once you see Lake Mackenzie Road, turn right again and continue driving for 2.5km. You’ll then see Lake Mackenzie’s car park.

If you’re coming from the southern side of K’gari, Lake Mackenzie is best accessed via 4WD from K’gari Beach Resort which is within 75 Mile Beach. Then drive inland to Central Station along the one-way road and in 6km, just follow the signs to Lake Mackenzie! You should then see the short section of stairs towards the lake.

Lake Wabby

Located in Hammerstone Sandblow, it’s 18km away or 47 minutes from Lake Mackenzie via Lake Mackenzie Road and Northern Road.

Lake Wabby is best accessed from K’gari Beach Resort which is within 75 Mile Beach, and it’s only 11km or 36 minutes away. Can I swim in Lake Wabby?

Yes! Lake Wabby is the deepest lake on the island and hosts a wide variety of fish and turtles. While it's not crystal clear, you should definitely visit Lake Wabby as scientists have studied and predicted that in the years to come, the lake will be covered by the Hammerstone Sandblow sand dunes. The lake used to be wider years ago - but little by little, it’s being engulfed by the white sand. So, before the lake completely disappears, you should stop by for a relaxing swim!
