K'gari (formally known as Fraser Island) is one of Australia's most iconic holiday destinations. This world heritage listed area is the largest sand island in the world and a natural playground for those who love outdoor adventures. A very popular year-round destination, K'gari features a spectacular array of special sites and natural phenomenon which must be seen to be believed.

Here are our Top 10 K'gari Attractions!

1. 75 Mile Beach

K'gari's one and only 'highway', 75 Mile Beach, is a drivable gazetted stretch of beach which takes traffic along almost the entire east coast of the Island. Driving along this stretch of hard sand is certainly a drawcard for travellers to K'gari and is a 'must-do' on all tag-along tours. 75 Mile Beach can only be used by four-wheel drives during low tide and all Queensland road rules apply. Drivers also need to keep an eye out for planes as this beach doubles as the only landing strip on the Island for scenic flights!

2. Central Station

On the edge of an ancient rainforest, you will find Central Station, the historic site of a former wooding village which was home to a number of houses and a school in the 1920's. From here you can follow the boardwalk along the edge of crystal clear Wanggoolba Creek to Basin Lake, Pile Valley and Lake Wabby

3. Eli Creek

Eli Creek is a popular swimming spot located on the eastern side of K'gari. Moving around 80 million litres of water each day, Eli Creek begins inland and flows through the forest to 75 Mile Beach where it pours up to four million litres into the ocean every hour! Grab a pool noodle or inflatable, lie back and relax as you float downstream in the cool fresh water of Eli Creek.

4. Maheno Shipwreck

The S.S Maheno shipwreck is an amazing attraction on K'gari's 75 Mile Beach. It suffered a somewhat disastrous fate to end up on the island. Formally a 1905 luxury passenger ship, a cyclone left the Maheno adrift before she eventually beached on Fraser Island. At the time there were no passengers on board, so it was alone in its final destination. Despite several attempts to refloat the ship, the Maheno still rests on 75 Mile Beach and is now a popular spot for photographers and selfie stars.

5. Champagne Pools

The Champagne Pools are a series of shallow, sandy swimming holes situated close to Indian Head on K'gari. With each incoming wave, the pools are filled with fresh seawater that bubbles and fizzes over the lava rocks creating a unique natural phenomenon. The Champagne Pools are the safest place to enjoy the saltwater around K'gari and a great way to cool off after a busy day of exploring.

6. Sand Dunes

Fraser Island wouldn't be the largest sand island in the world without the amazing sand dunes which make up its foundation. These dunes began to form hundreds of thousands of years ago as the wind, waves and currents moved large amounts of sand around the world before it settles on the coast of Queensland. Many of the dunes are now permanent structures and support an array of plant life, but many of them, such as the Hammerstone Sandblow, continue to move with the shifting winds and tides.

7. Lake Wabby

Another great place to take a swim on the island, Lake Wabby is home to a number of fish species and certainly worth a visit. Lake Wabby is both a Window and Barrage Lake and a beautiful sight to see but sadly this special place won't be around forever. Lake Wabby is slowly being swallowed by the well-known Hammerstone Sandblow which will eventually cover the lake completely.

8. Indian Head

Indian Head is the premier lookout on K'gari. With stunning views of Fraser Island and the Coral Sea, Indian Head is the most easterly point on the island, jutting out into the ocean. This stunning lookout is the best place for turtle, dolphin, shark and seasonal whale spotting and certainly worth the climb!

9. Lake McKenzie

Lake McKenzie is one of many perched lakes on K'gari. Consisting of 100% rainwater, this crystal clear lake is one of the best places on the Island for swimming and the soft white silica sands that form its shores make it one of the most visited places on K'gari.

10. Lake Birrabeen

Lake Birrabeen is another of K'gari's many famous lakes. Much like Lake McKenzie, it is made up completely of rainwater and has no rivers or streams feeding into it. The water's clarity is maintained by all organic matter being filtered out through the sand, allowing it to retain its crystal clear appearance. Lake Birrabeen is much less visited than some of Fraser Island's other attractions, making it the perfect spot for a secluded escape and swim.
